Montezuma Lodge No. 1, A.F. & A.M. will again grant several scholarships to help first year college students from Santa Fe during the upcoming school year. The amount of the scholarship grants will depend upon the money available at the time of the grant, but present indications are that there will be at least three (3) scholarships of approximately $2,000 each.
Anyone can apply. A Masonic family relationship is not necessary nor relevant to consideration.
The Lodge has appointed a committee. The committee will receive the applications, screen them, and may invite several of the most promising applicants to come for personal interviews. The awards will be announced in late May or early June.
It is the Lodge policy that all grant money maybe disbursed to the best interest of the student in the judgment of the committee. When the successful grantee registers, he or she should ask the Student Aid office at the school to write a letter of verification to the Lodge.
There are no limitations upon the use of this scholarship money; it may be applied by the school or college for the grantee's benefit or for any part of the cost of his or her attending the first year, such as tuition, room and board, books, or for texts and supplies, travel to and from school, etc.
In screening the applications the committee will consider the following:
A) The applicant's citizenship and leadership potential as demonstrated by his or her school and out-of-school activities, recommendations, honors obtained, offices held, and so forth.
B) The applicant's financial need, tentative academic major he or she selects, and the identity of the college or university he or she hopes to attend will all be considered by the committee. Applicants who intend to go to school or college within the State of New Mexico will be preferred over those who intend to go out-of-state, unless the selected major is not available in New Mexico.
C) Grade point average as earned during the applicant's Junior and Senior high-school years. A significant improvement in grades during the Senior year will be given a certain amount of extra weight.
D) Each applicant will be asked to submit an essay of approximately 150 words to be composed and written by the applicant personally and submitted in his own handwriting. The preferred subject matter of the essay is "What I Expect a College Education to Do for Me Personally and to Improve My Contribution to Society."
All applications should be in the hands of the committee before May 1, 2012 Applications should be mailed to:
